The 2008 Superleggera - Only 172 Units for the US Market (Comprising 10 in White, 34 in Gray, 37 in Black, 45 in Yellow, and 46 in Orange) The Superleggera stands as the ultimate expression of Lamborghini's entry-level supercar, the Gallardo, shedding a remarkable 126 pounds through an extensive incorporation of super-strong yet lightweight carbon fiber materials. Virtually every exterior detail, including the engine cover, rear diffuser, underbody cover, exterior mirrors, rear spoiler, side sills, and inner door panels, boasts the weight-saving prowess of carbon fiber.

Even some of the conventional glass elements, such as the rear window, have been replaced with featherlight polycarbonate. While the reduction of 126 pounds in a supercar is undoubtedly commendable, it's essential to acknowledge that the Superleggera's 3434-pound curb weight, while improved, still doesn't quite align with the Italian moniker it bears, "superleggera" (meaning "super light"). Notably, Lamborghini has amplified the already potent 512-horsepower output of the Gallardo's 5.0-liter V-10 engine by an additional 11 horsepower in the Superleggera variant. This power increase is attributed to recalibrated engine software and an enlarged intake manifold. The torque output remains unchanged at 376 pound-feet, peaking at 4250 rpm.

To complement its enhanced performance, the Superleggera is equipped with 19-inch wheels wrapped in grippy Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires, an option also available for the standard Gallardo. The suspension settings remain consistent with those of the base model, as Lamborghini opted to maintain the already impressive handling dynamics.

For those desiring even more stopping power, carbon-ceramic brakes can be specified for the Superleggera at an additional cost, a feature included on our test car, commanding a significant $15,600 premium. In addition to the myriad carbon-fiber components adorning both the interior and exterior, the Superleggera receives various interior refinements. Alcantara, a synthetic suede material, replaces leather on the dashboard, lending a sportier and more tactile feel. While European versions enjoy specially crafted lightweight bucket seats, U.S.-bound Superleggera models are equipped with the optional sport seats found on the standard Gallardo. These seats are marginally heavier, adding 66 pounds to the car's weight, a concession made to incorporate built-in side airbags for American safety standards compliance.
